About us

Grand Timber is situated east of Louis Trichardt in the picturesque Soutpansberg mountains.

In 2020 Grand Timber was born out of a collaboration between Grand Select, which was a small but well established CCA treating facility and Springfield farms which had recently acquired vast Eucalyptus plantations in the Soutpansberg.

We identified a synergy between the two companies and entered into a partnership.

Due to our now stable and secure timber supply we rapidly outgrew our production capabilities. In 2024 we acquired a much larger treating plant, we built a new facility which has enhanced our production output.

We are now able to satisfy our clients needs in a much reduced lead time.

Quality

Quality control is an ongoing process. It begins with thinning in the growing phase of the trees where only the best quality is grown to maturity. The trees are harvested, debarked and left for six weeks in the field to allow for curing. Once cured they are cross cut into different lengths and diameters. Only the best timber is selected and sent to the treating facility, where it undergoes another round of grading. The timber is now ready for treating.

Process

The process requires pulling a vacuum in a sealed vessel. Once all the air has been removed from the timber, the vessel is flooded with wood preservative (CCA). Thereafter additional preservative is forced into the wood with a pressure pump. The chemical binds with the wood cells. Once this process is completed excess preservative is extracted from the vessel which completes the treating process.

Chemistry

Copper Chrome arsenic (CCA) is impregnated into the wood through pressure. Each compound has a specific function which defends the pole against decay and insect damage thereby greatly prolonging the poles lifespan. When the timber undergoes the pressure treatment, a chemical reaction takes place known as “fixation” which causes the chemicals to become immobile in the wood, as it is now fixed to the wood cells. It is therefore safe to use in any of its intended applications.

Specifications

After treating, sample poles are randomly selected and a core is extracted out of the poles to determine if penetration has been achieved. SATAS which is a certification body, does regular inspections of our products to determine whether we meet the correct specifications set out by the NRCS, a governmental regulatory board. Once all specifications are adhered to our products are fit to go to market.
